From Our Kitchen | The Weekend Edit

There’s something about October evenings that makes staying in feel a little more magical.

The candles are lit, the blankets are out, and our 13 Nights of Halloween watchlist is giving us plenty of reasons to question every unexpected noise in the house.

With Scorpio season officially here, we're embracing slower evenings, a little mystery, and the simple pleasures that make a night at home feel special.

And no movie night is complete without popcorn.

Not the microwave kind. The homemade, freshly popped, still-warm kind that fills the kitchen with the most wonderful smell.

The best part? You only need three ingredients and a few minutes at the stove.

Simple ingredients. A little patience. The perfect bowl of popcorn.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, or enough to coat the bottom of your pot

  • ½ cup popcorn kernels

  • Salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Warm the oil. In a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat, add the olive oil and two popcorn kernels. Cover and wait for both kernels to pop. While you wait, set a large serving bowl nearby.

  2. Add the remaining kernels. Once the test kernels pop, turn off the heat and remove the pot from the burner. Add the remaining kernels, cover, and gently shake the pot to distribute them evenly.

  3. Give it a minute. Let the covered pot rest off the heat for 60 seconds. This helps the kernels warm evenly before popping.

  4. Let the magic happen. Return the pot to medium heat, gently shaking it occasionally. Once the kernels begin popping, carefully leave the lid slightly ajar to release steam while keeping the popcorn contained.

  5. Listen for the finish. When the popping slows to one pop every few seconds, remove the pot from the heat. If the popcorn begins overflowing before it's finished, carefully transfer some to your serving bowl and continue cooking the rest.

  6. Season and enjoy. Pour the popcorn into your bowl, sprinkle with salt, and toss. Add any favorite toppings, if you'd like, and serve while warm.

A little kitchen tip: Don't skip the 60-second rest or the steam release. They're small steps that help the kernels pop evenly and keep your popcorn from becoming soggy.

Make It a Ritual

A beautiful night in doesn't have to be complicated.

Start with a warm shower and your favorite body-care ritual. Slip into something comfortable, dim the lights, and find the coziest spot on the couch.

Light a candle, prepare your popcorn, and choose a movie that makes you want to stay up just a little later.

Our recent Halloween watchlist includes

The Sixth Sense, What Lies Beneath, and Get Out.

And if you hear something suspicious in the hallway?

Maybe don't investigate it alone.

We're still working on that part.

A Little More Magic After Dark

Whether you're planning a solo movie night, spending the evening with someone special, or gathering your favorite people for a Halloween marathon, the best rituals are often the simplest.

A good movie. A warm bowl of homemade popcorn with an easy stovetop popcorn recipe. A little time to yourself.

Here's to making ordinary evenings feel extraordinary.

Follow along with our 13 Nights of Halloween for more cozy evenings, spooky favorites, and little rituals worth making your own.
